Voting Rights Talk

Reception with Duke alumni and Danielle Carman, Deputy Director for the Southern Coalition for Social Justice

Complementary wine and cheese reception beginning at 5:30PM.

Presentation by Danielle Carman, Deputy Director for the SCSJ beginning at 6:15PM.

The SCSJ, a organization of lawyers based in Durham, NC, has been leading the challenges to voter suppression and redistricting in North Carolina and throughout the South, including:

  • Racial gerrymandering litigation, originally successful but currently stayed pending appeal, which could potentially result in significant restricting within the North Carolina;
  • Pending litigation, which proposes a legal standard for determining when partisan gerrymandering exists;
  • Successful challenge to the monster voter suppression law enacted by the North Carolina state legislature in 2013; and
  • Defamation claims brought for unfounded allegations of voted fraud.
